The Ultimate Packing Guide: How to Pack Like a Pro
The Ultimate Packing Guide: How to Pack Like a Pro
Packing is the most time-consuming part of any move. Done right, it protects your valuables and makes unpacking a breeze. Here's how our professional packers do it.
Gather Your Supplies First
Before you start, stock up on:
- Sturdy double-walled moving boxes (various sizes)
- Packing tape and a tape gun
- Bubble wrap and packing paper
- Markers for labelling
- Stretch wrap for furniture
- Mattress bags
Kitchen Packing Tips
Dishes and Plates
Wrap each plate individually in packing paper. Stack plates vertically (like records) — they're less likely to break this way. Fill any empty space in the box with crumpled paper.
Glasses and Stemware
Use cell divider boxes for glasses. Stuff the inside of each glass with crumpled paper before wrapping the outside.
Pots and Pans
Nest smaller pans inside larger ones. Line with dish towels or packing paper to prevent scratching.
Fragile Items
Golden Rule: Heavier items go on the bottom, lighter items on top. Never exceed 30 lbs per box.
For extra-fragile items like artwork and mirrors, use mirror boxes or have your movers wrap them in moving blankets.
Clothing
- Leave clothes in dresser drawers if the dresser is being moved
- Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes — no folding required
- Vacuum-seal bags work great for bulky winter jackets and bedding
Electronics
The original box is always best. If you don't have it, wrap in anti-static bubble wrap and pack snugly. Label all cables and take photos before disconnecting.
Furniture Disassembly
Tape small hardware (screws, bolts) in labelled zip-lock bags and tape them to the furniture piece they belong to. Take photos before disassembly.
Room-by-Room Strategy
Pack one room at a time and label boxes with both the room name and contents. Colour-code boxes with coloured tape for each room — it speeds up unloading dramatically.
