Student Moving Guide: Moving in Vancouver for UBC and SFU Students

Moving as a student in Vancouver is a whole different experience — tight budgets, small spaces, short timelines, and unfamiliar neighbourhoods. Here's everything you need to know.

Timing Your Student Move

The two biggest student moving windows in Vancouver are:

• Late August – Early September: Start of fall semester
• Late April – Early May: End of spring semester

These are peak moving periods. Book your movers 4–6 weeks in advance during these windows.

Popular Student Neighbourhoods in Vancouver

Near UBC

• Kitsilano (Kits): 15–20 min by bus to UBC, lively and walkable
• Point Grey: Closest neighbourhood to UBC campus
• Dunbar: Quieter, more affordable, family-friendly feel

Near SFU Burnaby

• Burnaby Heights: Central Burnaby, great transit links
• Capitol Hill: Quiet and affordable
• Brentwood: Growing urban hub with SkyTrain access

Near SFU Vancouver (Harbour Centre)

• Downtown Vancouver / Gastown: Walking distance to downtown SFU
• Yaletown / West End: Vibrant but pricier

What Students Typically Move

Most student moves involve:

• Bed frame and mattress
• Desk and chair
• Wardrobe or dresser
• Small kitchen appliances
• Boxes of clothes, books, and personal items

This is typically a 1–2 hour job with 2 movers — one of the most affordable moves we do!

Student Moving Tips

1. Move on a weekday — cheaper and less traffic
2. Check if your new building requires elevator booking — book early
3. Measure doorways before moving day, especially for larger furniture
4. Pack your valuables separately and transport them yourself
5. Use your university's free moving resources — many schools have carts, dollies, and storage
