Last Minute Movers in Vancouver: What to Do When You Need to Move Fast
Last Minute Movers in Vancouver: What to Do When You Need to Move Fast
Sometimes a move can't wait. A job offer, a lease surprise, a family emergency, or a closing date that jumps forward — suddenly you need movers in Vancouver this week, or even tomorrow. Here's how to handle a last-minute move without losing your mind (or overpaying).
First: Can You Actually Get a Mover on Short Notice?
Yes — but it depends on the season and the day. In Vancouver:
- Off season (November–February): Same-week and sometimes next-day moves are usually available.
- Peak season (June–September): Same-week is harder, especially on month-end weekends. Weekdays are your best bet.
- Same-day moves: Possible but not guaranteed. Call early in the morning — most movers schedule their day by 8 AM and can sometimes squeeze in a small afternoon job.
SS Moving Services offers same-day and next-day moves across Metro Vancouver when crew and trucks are available. Call (236) 826-3168 and we'll tell you straight away if we can fit you in.
What You Can Do in 24–48 Hours
When time is short, prioritize ruthlessly. Focus on the things only you can do:
1. Book the Mover First
Before you pack a single box, lock in your mover. Have these details ready when you call:
- Move date and preferred start time
- Both addresses (from and to)
- Home size (number of bedrooms, roughly how much stuff)
- Any specialty items (piano, safe, large appliances)
- Access details (elevator, stairs, parking)
A mover can quote a flat rate from this information in minutes.
2. Secure Packing Supplies Fast
Don't waste time hunting for boxes. Order or pick up:
- A box bundle (small/medium/large) from a moving company or hardware store
- Packing tape and a tape gun
- Bubble wrap or packing paper for breakables
- Marker pens and a roll of labels
Many movers (including us) sell or deliver a supplies bundle with your booking — ask when you book.
3. Pack in Priority Order
When you have limited time, pack in this order:
- Non-essentials first — out-of-season clothes, books, decor, garage and storage items.
- Kitchen — pack everything except plates, cups, and utensils for the next day or two.
- Bedrooms — pack clothes you won't wear before the move; leave out one outfit per person.
- Bathrooms — pack everything except daily toiletries.
- Last — pack a "first night" box (chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, important documents) and keep it with you.
4. Handle the Paperwork
Even in a rush, don't skip these:
- Confirm access — book the freight elevator and arrange parking for the truck at both buildings.
- Transfer utilities — at minimum, schedule electricity and internet connection at the new place so you're not moving into a dark, offline home.
- Update your address — set up Canada Post mail forwarding; it takes 5 minutes online and catches everything you forget.
What to Skip When You're Rushed
When time is tight, let these go:
- Perfect sorting and decluttering. Move it all and sort later. Trying to declutter under time pressure usually just slows you down.
- Deep cleaning the old place yourself. Hire a cleaner or accept the deposit risk — your time is worth more than the cleaning fee right now.
- Selling things online. Listing and meeting buyers takes hours you don't have. Donate instead.
Should You Pay for Packing Help?
On a last-minute move, yes — if you can afford it. Professional packers can pack an average apartment in 2–4 hours, which would take you 1–2 full days. When you're already stressed and short on time, buying that time back is often worth the $200–$600 cost.
Most movers (including SS Moving) offer packing as an add-on. Even partial packing — just the kitchen and breakables — saves hours and reduces damage risk.
How to Avoid Overpaying on a Rush Move
Last-minute doesn't have to mean overpriced. Watch for these:
- Avoid "emergency" surcharges. A reputable mover may charge a premium for same-day, but it should be reasonable (10–20%), not double. Get the total in writing before you book.
- Get a flat rate, not hourly, if possible. On a rushed move you can't control how long things take. A flat rate protects you from the clock running over.
- Confirm what's included. Travel time, equipment, disassembly, and basic protection should be in the price — not added after.
- Don't pay a large deposit upfront. A small booking fee is normal; a large upfront payment to a mover you found an hour ago is a red flag.
Same-Day Move Checklist
If you're moving today:
