10 Essential Moving Tips for Vancouver Residents
10 Essential Moving Tips for Vancouver Residents
Moving in Metro Vancouver comes with unique challenges — from narrow condo hallways to elevator bookings and busy traffic. Here's what our team has learned after thousands of moves across the Lower Mainland.
1. Book Your Elevator in Advance
If you're moving from or into a condo or apartment, you must book the building elevator at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Most strata councils require a damage deposit and have limited time slots — especially on weekends.
2. Start Packing 3–4 Weeks Early
Begin with items you rarely use: seasonal clothing, books, décor. Label every box with the destination room and a brief description of contents. This saves hours on move-in day.
3. Declutter Before You Pack
Donate or sell items you haven't used in a year. Fewer items = faster move = lower cost. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist work great for Vancouver residents.
4. Use the Right Boxes
- Small boxes for heavy items (books, tools)
- Medium boxes for kitchen items
- Large boxes for pillows, linens, and light items
- Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes
5. Protect Your Floors and Walls
Professional movers use moving blankets and floor runners. If you're DIY moving, pick these up at U-Haul or ask your moving company to include them.
6. Plan for Vancouver Traffic
Avoid moving during rush hour (7–9 AM and 4–7 PM). The worst bottlenecks are the Port Mann Bridge, Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, and Granville Street. Early morning Saturday moves are ideal.
7. Take Photos Before Disconnecting Electronics
Snapshot the back of your TV, computer, and home theatre setup before unplugging. This makes reconnection a breeze in your new home.
8. Notify Important Parties Early
Update your address with Canada Post, CRA, BC Services Card, ICBC, your bank, and subscription services at least 2 weeks before the move.
9. Keep an Essentials Box
Pack a clearly labelled box with everything you'll need for the first 24 hours: phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, important documents, and medications.
10. Hire Licensed and Insured Movers
Always verify that your moving company is licensed and carries liability insurance and cargo coverage. Ask for a written quote and confirm there are no hidden fees.
